Wulaokeng Drum & Dance Theater Date: 2009/07/11 ~ 08/23 Place: Wulaokeng Park, Yilan County
This big scale event takes place around the county in three different scenic places: Wulaokeng Forest Park (Mountain), Dongshan River Water Park (River), and Toucheng coastal area (Ocean), implying the bountiful rain of Yilan flows from the mountains to the river and then to the ocean, representing the ever lasting spirit and vitality of Yilan.
Presided by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Yilan County, the Wulaokeng Park features the theme of Drum & Dance performances this year. With years of experiences in this field, ICAA joined the team work, in charge of international groups and programming. Listen to the sounds of the raindrops falling down to the land; they are just like millions of musical notes randomly spread onto the earth from the sky, coincident with the vibrant rhythms of the world found in different cultures which also reflect the spirit and vitality of the people living on that land.
Among these groups, the Korean percussion group "Rhythm & Theater" gas up the audience with its non-verbal performance of action, drum rhythms and creativity that can only be cooled down with an "Ice Beats" show! Cook Islands present the unique "pate" (slit drum) and "hura" dance of Polynesian culture. Uzbekistan group led by master Abbos Kosimov shows the strenuous rhythms of doyra, assessed as the most artistic and professional group. But none is more special than the Egyptian "Tannoura" (whirling dance) that is presented for the first time in Taiwan, possessing mystery, beauty and dazzling technique in one, which has become the spotlight of the Festival. Ritimart of Turkey displays various kinds of percussion instruments from Mid-East region. Ivory Coast outstands itself with African traditional ritual and contemporary dance with Djembe rhythms. Other than these, the well-known Yilan folk song presented by Uzbekistan group; a dance composed by Ivory Coast mourning for the victims of the Typhoon Morakot; donation of CD sales to the victims by the Turkish group, and improvised joint performances of the groups all make the Festival a warm and unforgettable memory.
