As a special type of folk song music in Taiwan, Hengchun folk song was designated by the Pingtung County Government as one of the important intangible cultural heritages in Pingtung in October 2008. The Hengchun Folk Song House, renovated from the old dormitory of the Hengchun Hospital, was opened in August 2009 to display the seven types of tunes of Hengchun folk songs and musical instruments. For the opening exhibition, a world folk song music section was also planned by ICAA Taiwan to present the diversity of Taiwan and world folk song music, to increase the awareness and sensibility of the local people on the important meaning on preservation of our own cultural heritage.
The exhibition was titled "Kaleidoscope on Folk Song of the World", divided into "Origin of Folk Song" introducing the definition and origin folk song; and "UN for Folk Song" presenting some of the most representative folk song music of the world, including Hudhud Chants of Ifugao (Philippines), Throat Singing (Mongolia), Kyrgyz Epic Tellers, Baul Songs (Bangladesh), Pansori Epic Chant (Korea), Yoik of Sami people, Yodeling of Alpine Shepherds, Indonesia Gamelan, Lakalaka Dances and Sung Speeches (Tonga), Tibetan music and dance, folk song of Sicily Island and Costa Rica, some of which are designated by UNESCO as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
