The most popular celebration event held in Taitung on the eastern coast during the Lantern Festival is "Bombing Xuantan God," which is also known as "Handan God." It was said that "Xuantan God" was the master of the Lo-fu Cave of Er-mei Mountain in Shang Dynasty. His subordinates, the gods of "Delicacy," "Treasure," "Wealth," and "Market," were worshiped by people as "Martial Mammon." Another saying goes that "Xuantan God" was a military officer in Shang Dynasty, named Shao Gong Ming who was apt at finance and was killed in a battle. He was regarded as the "Silver God" in the Chinese novel "Feng Shen Bang," and was believed to bring fortune to his worshippers.

It was said that Handan was inborn to be afraid of coldness. Thus, when the god palanquin patrols the streets, people set off firecrackers along the way trying to keep his body warm. People believe that the stronger the firecrackers are, the more wealth Handan God will bring to them. In order to show his bravery, the Handan God, portrayed by a man naked to the waist, holding only a banyan branch to cover his face is carried together with the sedan porters to confront the fierce firecrackers. This custom and practice has become one of the most vigorous celebration activities during the Lantern Festival in Taiwan.
