Wu-Ben, known as Bao Sheng Da Di (The Life-Protecting Emperor) nowadays, was born on the 15th day of the third lunar month in 979 A.D. in Beijiao, Fujian Province in China. He was very intelligent and hard learning since his early years. At the age of 17, he received medical knowledge and magical powers from Xi Wang Mu (The Mother of Western King). At age 24, he passed the governmental examination and served as historian for the emperor. Nevertheless, he resigned the high official post in order to become a doctor for life. The local residents constructed a temple in his honor and worshipped him after he died. People respectfully refer to him as "The God of Medicine."

      When the residents of Baijiao, China followed the Koxinga's army across the sea to Taiwan in 1661, they brought along the joss of Bao Sheng Da Di from the Ciji Temple in Baijiao in order to pray for a safe journey. Later the followers built another Ciji Temple in Hsuehchia, a town in Tainan, Taiwan. People believe Bao Sheng Da Di helps to protect their lives, and some 200 Ciji temples have been constructed throughout the island by his worshippers. Every year, on the 15th day of the third lunar month, massive celebrations are held to mark the birthday of Bo Sheng Da Di. The most special of these events are "Visit to Baijiao" and the "Bao Sheng Cultural Festival in Dalongdong."
